2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Management Change Follows Lukewarm Response
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster unveiling last fall.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified employees about this decision through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had indicated the need for a more defined vision.
Ismailer noted that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed focus, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
Trend of Strategic Acquisitions
This announcement follows a comparable step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the entire content from the president's announcement:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just wrapped up your town hall - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a message, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and innovative creators we have had the chance to work with - and we’re eager for that relationship to persist.”
Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The community feedback from last fall’s the game demo was enlightening. It affirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the necessity for a clearer identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the input to consideration and overhauled the title with a renewed goal - one that’s ready to deliver on its promise to our audience.
Our confidence in this project increases every day. To further the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the incoming Director of the team. Following some time of conversations, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s leadership and background in the PVP shooter field is considerable, having dedicated the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most well-known series in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in greeting him in the coming days. We are all looking forward to continue seeing the progress of Project ETHOS in the months to follow.
The President
Background of the New Head
Brinkman currently holds the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously worked at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, prior to that, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Game Information and Concept
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a early access event. At the time, the developers presented the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch explains. "Challenge the opponents with unique powers, risks, and obstacles that evolve every session. Do you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Alternatively take a risk, risk it all, and hope your group can achieve the highest spot? The decision is in your hands."
The game lacks an announced debut schedule or supported systems, but fans can expect further news as development advances.
