Conservative responses to the limited release of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this transparent with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the redaction process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise serious questions about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing commentators and former President loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
But a few are not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative voices to go on the offensive.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these documents for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Conservative Comment Remains Subdued
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively muted after the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for action that came before the congressional vote to enact a bill requiring the documents' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative personalities were given physical binders of materials that included little new information.
