Our Premier Album of 2025: The Artist's Lux Secures the Premier Place.

Initially, this album might appear more like an arduous university challenge rather than the latest popular music project from a musician who just had a last single featured a global pop icon. Split into four different movements and voiced in thirteen tongues, we have a dizzying orchestral-influenced opus investigating feminine mystique, spiritual transcendence, and corporal change, often via the prism of different women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic treated with raw openness elsewhere—is launched skyward here, buoyed by the constant sound of a major orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter within an extensive list of collaborators. Its sheer daring by itself makes the efforts of contemporary pop stars seem rather modest.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

The fact that this album succeeds in escape dry intellectual posturing feels almost miraculous, and full credit going to Rosalía. While it's not the first time album to blend historical sounds with the present, its scale are much greater on Lux, and the balancing act far more pronounced. The element that really elevates her fourth album, beyond its complex tunes, rich compositions, and inherent drama, proves to be an essential spirit of fun. Similar to the iconic Björk during her height, you find a captivating sense to Rosalía's singing which sweeps you into its whirlwind. When she's tearing your heart in two, you still desire to stay alongside her through the journey.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

This playful energy comes forth brightly during the stunning piano-led ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy over more than four minutes. Then, all the music falls silent, and we hear a spontaneous giggle and a comment before a comically exaggerated string surge crashes in with cartoonish impact. The track then shifts to the frenetic single featuring racing strings, an imposing choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than Björk.

"The charm with Lux is that the listener rarely quite understand—nor wish to predict—where it is going next."

Almost each song ends at a totally distinct point from where it began. A track explores the fleeting nature of celebrity with a delicate symphony only to disintegrating into electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a song that recalls the artist's previous trap-infused style starts out dark and brooding, with menacing vocals, before sudden flamenco handclaps and a heavenly choir enter to soften the song's rough corners.

The Balance Between Experiment & Pop

Another crucial achievement of Lux involves navigating the line of bold innovation and broad appeal. This is little surprise that it has become the artist's highest-charting release to crack the upper reaches of key charts: at its core a collection of truly undeniable pop songs. One track sung primarily in the English language swells on a chorus that seems to gather more and more nagging hooks as it spins upward. This feat gets echoed on another powerful track that expands and contracts, intertwining multiple melodies as a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns the cultural honesty of contemporary breakup songs, lambasting a former partner described as an "psychological bully".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, akin to a storybook figure hiding a blade: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You have the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a grand level, a hungry reach for high Art in an era of impending AI-generated sameness. It rejects solipsism in favor of sublime transcendence, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its inherent excess. It is a deep source of hidden gems that takes patience to fully mine but never feels like a chore. Where some major releases of 2025 felt like a meager scraps, Lux is a lavish banquet where the characters at the table, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flit from discussions about ancient figures, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and shared gossip about useless men. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly creative practitioner.
